Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Flat headstones for graves must meet the specific regulations of the receiving cemetery — dimensions, thickness, acceptable materials, and mounting requirements. Many New Jersey memorial parks that require flush markers specify standard maximum dimensions and minimum granite thickness. Flat Marker Guide confirms the current rules at your cemetery before production begins, ensuring your flat marker meets every requirement.

Foundation Requirements

Flat headstones for graves are set on prepared beds of compacted gravel or concrete, depending on the cemetery's specification. Some institutions require a full concrete sub-base beneath the granite; others allow a gravel setting. Flat Marker Guide's installation crew prepares the setting to the cemetery's stated method, sets the marker level with the surrounding ground, and documents the installation with a photograph.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Flat headstones are accepted in virtually all New Jersey faith-affiliated cemeteries, and many faith cemeteries have specific sections designated for flush-level markers. Religious symbols — crosses, Stars of David, praying hands, doves — are carved into the face of flat granite markers with the same quality and care as on upright monuments. We confirm all imagery is appropriate for the receiving cemetery before production begins.

Flat Headstone / Marker

A flat headstone for a grave is a horizontal granite slab, typically two to four inches thick, placed level with the surface of the surrounding cemetery ground. It carries the deceased's name, dates, and any additional inscription or symbol on its upward-facing surface, which is typically polished for maximum legibility. Flat markers are required in many New Jersey lawn-section memorial parks where vertical monuments would interfere with grounds maintenance, and they are an aesthetically appropriate choice in any cemetery as a lower-profile alternative to upright or slant headstones. Flat Marker Guide produces flat headstones in standard single-grave dimensions and in wider companion formats for married couples. American-made granite in black, gray, mahogany, and other colors is available; the polished surface of a black or dark gray flat marker makes lettering and symbols highly legible against the stone's face. All flat headstones are produced to the cemetery-compliant specifications confirmed before production begins.

Granite Options

American-made granite for flat headstones is selected for surface quality on the polished face — the side visible after installation. India Black, with its consistent dark surface and high polish, is the most popular choice for flat markers because the contrast between polished surface and carved lettering is maximum. Mountain Gray and Dakota Mahogany are both available and provide different aesthetic characters. All flat marker granite is sourced from domestic quarries with verified quality standards appropriate for outdoor memorial use.

Custom Design Process

Flat headstone design at Flat Marker Guide begins with a consultation — in English, Russian, or Polish, at our Morris County showroom or by phone — where we gather the cemetery's requirements and your design preferences. We produce a scaled drawing of the marker's face showing all lettering, symbols, and borders for your approval before carving begins.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Every flat headstone at Flat Marker Guide passes through six stages. Consultation: we document all design preferences and the cemetery's requirements. Design drawing: a scaled layout of the marker's face is produced and approved before carving. Material preparation: American-made granite is selected and inspected. Hand-carving: lettering, borders, and symbols are carved by our artisans. Finishing: letter fills, polish, and inspection. Installation: the marker is delivered to the cemetery, set by our crew on the prepared bed, leveled flush with the surrounding ground, and photographed.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“The cemetery where my husband is buried requires flat markers. Flat Marker Guide made his black granite marker with the most beautiful script lettering and a small carved lily. It lies quietly in the grass and says exactly what it should.” — Margaret, Ocean County NJ
